A Zoom call, an impactful meeting with Anurag Basu and an on-the-go audition set the wheels in motion for actor Kush Jotwani. In this exclusive chat with , he opened up aboutunder the legendary filmmaker known for his scriptless, instinct-driven approach and how he adapted to a process rooted in raw emotions.
1. How did the opportunity to be a part of Metro… In Dino come your way?
One fine day, a call from Anurag Basu Productions led to discussions over the project, and my intent was clear ever since. Had a Zoom meeting, which led to me meeting Basu sir, where he briefed me about the project and my role. I had to audition for the part while I was shooting for my second schedule of Dil Dosti Dilemma in Bangalore. Soon enough, when I was leaving for Mumbai on the flight, I got a confirmation from the team about the project and that I had got it.
2. Basu is infamous for working without a script. Was it the same in this project and how did you work through?
Sir’s working style has always been unique and true to the present tense emotion. He believes it’s crucial to let your realness out in the scene before it gets understood and overanalysed by your overpowering mind. His nature of work is reflected in the projects he does, and he removes gems on screen. It was new to me, so naturally, I was a little nervous, but he made it seamless and comforting, and it was a good process to follow through. You do realise a lot in this process.
4. You’re now headlining Knock Knock Kaun Hai opposite Aadhya Anand—what can we expect from this thriller?
A surreal storyline with twists, suspense, drama, mystery and a murder. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, never letting the audience know what’s going to happen next.
3. Can you tell us a bit about your character in Metro… In Dino, without giving away spoilers?
My character is a working corporate executive. Managing work & relationships and making sure he gives it all in what he’s got to do. The storyline I am involved in revolves primarily around Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur.
One actor or director on your ultimate dream-collab list?
I’ve already worked with him. And I’m forever grateful. Mr. Anurag Basu. I hope I get to work with him, together again. It’s been a beautiful journey. I would also love to explore and learn from all the masterminds of Indian cinema/film-making.
