Taylor Fritz stuns top seed Alexander Zverev to clinch 9th ATP title
Taylor Fritz stuns Zverev in Stuttgart final, claims his fourth grass court title without dropping a set and serve all week.
New Delhi:Â
Taylor Fritz delivered a flawless performance to clinch the 2025 BOSS Open title in Stuttgart as he defeated home favourite Alexander Zverev in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(0). With this triumph, the American lifted his career fourth title on grass and ninth overall, reinforcing his position as one of the most dangerous players on the surface heading into Wimbledon.
Looking ahead:
With this victory, Fritz now leads their rivalry by 8-5, having claimed the last five encounters. That’s an impressive streak considering Zverev’s top-tier ranking and form this season. For Zverev, the wait for a grass-court title continues as this loss marks his third defeat in a final on the surface, including two heartbreaks in Halle (2016, 2017).
Fritz is also set to climb back to World No.4 in the ATP rankings, leapfrogging Britain’s Jack Draper, who had momentarily overtaken him just a week ago.
The 27-year-old took an easy lead as he took the first, keeping the top seed on the back foot. In the second set, the game was interrupted for a brief time due to rain, but it did little to rattle Fritz’s rhythm.
From the very start, he looked firm and his numbers speak volumes about his form throughout the match. He slammed 11 aces, faced zero break points and won a staggering 88% of his first-serve points.
The German, who was in search of his 25th career title and his first ever on grass court, but could not find answers to break the American’s rhythm. Fritz kept him under pressure with aggressive returns and didn’t allow any room for momentum shift. The World No.3 tried to make a comeback in the second set, but once it reached tiebreak, Fritz flipped the switch and didn’t drop a single point, closing it out 7-0.
A perfect week in Germany:
What makes the win even more impressive is the way Fritz sailed through the tournament without dropping a single set. He became the first player since Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (Basel 2024) to win a title without dropping serve all week. This new achievement underlines just how clutch his serving game has become on grass.
Not just that, he also joined the elite company in grass-court achievements. Among active players, only Novak Djokovic(8) has more titles on grass than him, matching Matteo Berrettini and Nicolas Mahut with four.
