Heavy rain, thunderstorms disturb Mumbai Airport

Unseasonal thunderstorms and heavy rain disrupted flights in Mumbai and Hyderabad on 6 May 2025. Air India and IndiGo warned of delays and diversions. The IMD predicts ongoing storms. Travellers should verify flight schedules before heading to the airport.

Mumbai:

“Adverse weather conditions caused by thunderstorms and rain, are currently impacting flight operations in Mumbai. As a result, some of our flights to and from Mumbai may experience delays or diversions, which could affect our overall flight schedule. We are making every effort to minimize these disruptions,” the statement read.

A sudden spell of thunderstorms and heavy rain brought parts of Mumbai and its neighbouring areas to a standstill yesterday, disrupting flight operations. Air India issued an advisory late Wednesday night, alerting passengers of possible delays and flight diversions due to the adverse weather conditions.

The airline cited heavy rain and storm activity as the primary causes of the disruption.

Low-cost carrier IndiGo also warned of delays in its services, not just in Mumbai but also in Hyderabad, where similar weather patterns have emerged. “Pre-monsoon showers in Mumbai and Hyderabad have arrived in full swing and flight operations are being impacted, with possible delays ahead,” IndiGo said in its travel advisory.

Passengers flying in and out of these cities are being urged to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

IMD’s 7 day weather forecast for Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the unseasonal showers hit Mumbai on Tuesday night, bringing with them strong gusts of wind and intense thunderstorm activity. The sudden downpour led to waterlogging in some areas, traffic congestion, and brief halts on sections of the suburban railway network.

Travellers are advised to stay updated with airline announcements and plan journeys with additional buffer time in light of the unpredictable weather.
