Apple may skip iOS 19 and jump to iOS 26 – Here’s why

Apple might rebrand iOS 19 to iOS 26, aligning software names with the calendar year. This change aims to simplify versioning across devices like iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Alongside the new name, iOS 26 may bring a major design refresh inspired by visionOS.

New Delhi:

Instead of having different versions like iOS 19, macOS 16 and watchOS 12, Apple wants to make things easier. Moving ahead, Apple will use the year of the OS update as part of its name, much like car models. In late 2025, iOS 26 may make its debut and carry users through 2026, reported by Bloomberg.

Apple is expected to change the name of its next operating system from iOS 19 to iOS 26. The official announcement of the change is expected at WWDC which will be held on June 9. This change is part of a move to keep Apple’s software lineup more consistent by using calendar years for version numbers instead of the number of updates.

A vision-inspired design refresh

iOS 26 will reportedly bring a significant change to its design. Based on visionOS, the new interface may have translucent layers, rounded edges and floating controls. Apps like Messages and Camera may have a simpler design that highlights content and makes things easier.

The visual update is not just about beauty. It is Apple’s aim to give users a familiar user experience on all its products. Some features can sense how you hold the device, adding motion effects and gentle highlights to make things more interactive. As result more futuristic feel of iOS than it’s ever been.

Cleaner numbers, clearer branding

The same naming system may be used for iPhone as well as iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26 and visionOS 26. Apple believes this will make things clearer and bring its products together.

Apple’s mismatch between its hardware and software has been widely discussed for a long time. For example, the iPhone 16 is using iOS 18 and this may be confusing for users. Giving the software a new name, iOS 26, would help users and marketers understand it better. But there are doubts about whether the naming system for iPhones will eventually apply the same logical pattern.
