BYD unveils fast-charging
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD has introduced a new battery and charging system that allows for charging speeds nearly as fast as refueling a traditional car. According to reports, this innovative platform enables a range of approximately 400 kilometers with just five minutes of charging. The new system will be featured on BYD’s upcoming Han L and Tang L models, which will be priced starting from 270,000 yuan ($37,338) and 280,000 yuan, respectively. The quick charging time could help alleviate one of the major obstacles preventing widespread EV adoption.
In terms of sales, BYD is outpacing Tesla. In February, Tesla’s China sales plummeted 49% year-over-year, totaling just 30,688 vehicles, the lowest monthly total since July 2022. In contrast, BYD sold over 318,000 passenger vehicles last month, marking a 161% year-over-year increase. Although BYD plans to expand its charging infrastructure in China, it still lags behind Tesla, which boasts over 65,000 Superchargers globally. The new battery system also poses a challenge to Amperex Technology Co. Ltd, the current leader in global EV battery production.
This advancement further strengthens BYD’s position in the EV market, where it has already surpassed Tesla as the world’s leading EV seller. The company’s new charging system is set to outperform Tesla’s supercharger network, which can add 275 kilometers of range in 15 minutes. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz recently revealed a new-entry level CLA electric sedan capable of adding 325 kilometers in just 10 minutes of charging. BYD’s platform also promises impressive performance gains, with Chairman Wang Chuanfu stating that the platform can accelerate vehicles to 100 kilometers per hour in just 2 seconds.
