iPhone users can now use Google Translate as default app – here’s how
Apple's iOS 18.4 update now lets iPhone and iPad users set Google Translate as their default translation app. This change applies to system features like Siri and text selection. The move follows global regulatory pressure for more app choice.
Apple has included as an option for users who want to choose their default translation app on iPhone and iPad. As of March 31, users across the US and the world can switch from Apple’s Translate app to using Google Translate.
Now, translation tasks can be done by any translation app, not just by Siri or text notifications. Before, there was only Apple’s Translate available for system-level translations, and you couldn’t use anything else.
More control over default apps
This update follows earlier changes in iOS 18.4, where users could pick their preferred apps for navigation and playing media. Apple has allowed users to use custom email and web browsers for some time, and this feature now adds more flexibility.
The main reason for Apple’s decision is recent changes in European regulations. According to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, tech companies are now required to give users more control over their built-in apps. Apple has implemented this update for people everywhere, even though the law only affects the EU. The company wants to remain up-to-date with compliance and is open to allowing third-party developers access to their system.
How to make Google Translate the default
To select Google Translate as the default translation tool, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Translation and tap on Google Translate. When you choose a language, all system features that require translation will use Google’s app instead of Apple’s.
