downpour expected with IMD’s orange alert in effect

Hyderabad received much-needed rain on Thursday, easing the summer heat. The IMD issued an orange alert for Telangana, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms until May 19. Despite showers, high temperatures persist, with the monsoon expected between early and mid-June

Hyderabad:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Telangana, including Hyderabad, in effect until 19 May. The advisory warns of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms indicating that the region is gradually transitioning from summer extremes towards the onset of the monsoon.

Residents of Hyderabad awoke on Thursday to the soothing sound of rainfall, a welcome reprieve after days of relentless summer heat. Overnight showers and a drop in temperatures offered temporary comfort, though weather authorities have cautioned that the relief may be short-lived.

Weekly weather forecast for Hyderabad | IMD predictions

Daytime temperatures are expected to hover between 33 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius with humidity levels remaining uncomfortably high. For Thursday, temperatures are forecast at 24 degrees Celsius minimum and 36 degrees Celsius maximum, under mostly cloudy skies with a chance of one or two thundershowers.

In addition to the orange alert, a yellow alert remains in effect across the state for elevated temperatures, with some districts likely to experience daytime highs nearing 40 degrees Celsius until early next week.

While rain is likely to intensify from Friday (May 16), meteorologists say the wet spell will continue through the weekend before easing slightly on Sunday (May 19). Yet, even as the rain clouds roll in, heatwave-like conditions are set to linger.

IMD has also predicted continued light rain and thunderstorms across the city and 16 surrounding districts until at least 10 AM. Thursday. However, unsettled conditions are expected to persist into the weekend, with the possibility of more intense weather episodes looming.

Parts of the city had already experienced early signs of the shift on Wednesday evening, as brief spells of rain and gusty winds swept through various localities. While many enjoyed the cooler breeze, the IMD’s forecast suggests the state is still in for several days of turbulent weather. Thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning, and patchy rainfall are expected to affect isolated areas throughout Telangana in the coming days.

When will monsoon arrive in Hyderabad?

The pressing question across Hyderabad remains; when will the real relief arrive in the form of the monsoon?

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by around 28 May, a few days earlier than usual. Hyderabad typically sees the first monsoon showers a week or so later, suggesting a likely arrival in early to mid-June
