Weather department predicts more rainfall in Delhi-NCR

The national capital may also witness thunderstorms in the coming days with minimum and maximum temperatures likely to be between 21 to 34 degrees Celsius. The prediction has come after heavy rains led to chaos across Delhi and nearby areas on Friday.

New Delhi:

Earlier on Friday, the authorities received several complaints regarding uprooting of trees and branches due to thunderstorms. Several areas also witnessed heavy waterlogging making it difficult for commuters to reach their destinations on time, specially during rush hour in the morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more rainfall in Delhi and adjoining areas a day after heavy rains killed 5 people in the national capital on Friday. Several areas may also see generally cloudy skies with light rainfall. The weather department has also issued yellow alert in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the department, the national capital may also witness thunderstorms in the coming days with minimum and maximum temperatures likely to be between 21 to 34 degrees Celsius. The prediction has come after heavy rains led to chaos across Delhi and nearby areas on Friday. With 77 mm of rainfall recorded in Safdarjung, this was the second-highest rainfall recorded in May since 1901. The highest was recorded in May 2021 with 119.3 mm.

Waterlogging was reported in several areas

“We received a call regarding a house collapse in Kharkhari Nahar village in Najafgarh at 5:25 am. We deployed multiple teams on the spot and four people were rescued from the rubble,” news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.

Waterlogging was reported from areas like ITO, Minto Road, Indraprastha, Dhaula Kuan, R K Puram, Ring Road, Lakshmi Nagar, South Extension, and Chirag Dilli. The weather department had also issued a red alert, asking people to leave for home only if necessary. Among the five who lost their lives included a mother and her three children in Najafgarh. A part of the rooftop also collapsed in Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Taking to X, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “Delhi government has sanctioned Rs 25 Lakh as ex-gratia relief to Sh. Ajay, next of kin of four family members who lost their lives today in a tragic incident caused by heavy rain and storm in Village Kharkhari, Najafgarh.”
