Violence In Nagpur After Agitation Over Aurangzeb's Tomb; 50 Detained, Curfew Imposed In Several Areas
Violence erupted in Nagpur on Monday amid rumours surrounding a protest by a right-wing body for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb.

Violence erupted in central Nagpur in the Chitnis Park area in Mahal around 7.30 pm on Monday with stones hurled at police, leaving six persons and three policemen injured, officials said. The violence was triggered after rumours around the agitation by a right-wing body for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb.
Several areas of Nagpur city in Maharashtra witnessed violence on Monday evening as mobs torched vehicles and damaged property following an agitation by right-wing bodies for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb.
Police imposed prohibitory orders in the city and detained at least 50 people after mobs pelted stones and burnt vehicles and other property. Ravinder Singal, Nagpur CP said that section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita was imposed in the city.
How was the violence triggered? :
Another clash broke out in the Hansapuri area near the Old Bhandara Road between 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm. An unruly mob burnt several vehicles, and vandalised houses and a clinic in the area.
Around noon on Monday, several workers of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal held a demonstration in Mahal area demanding the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. During the protest, the right-wing demonstrators covered an effigy of the Mughal emperor and set it on fire. By around 7 pm, hundreds of youths started gathering in the area, shouting slogans, and pelting stones at the police.
Curfew Imposed In Several Areas; CM Appeals For Calm :
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, meanwhile, appealed for peace and harmony in the wake of the violence. Fadnavis called for calm and asked people not to believe rumours. "Police are managing the situation following stone pelting and tense situation in the Mahal area," the chief minister said in a statement.
Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, also said he is in constant contact with the police and asked them to cooperate with the people. Gadkari echoed Fadnavis and appealed to people to cooperate with the administration.
On Tuesday morning, an uneasy calm prevailed in Mahal area. Nagpur police officials said they have detained 50 to 60 people after conducting a combing operation overnight. Apart from Mahal, there is tense peace in the area including Bhaldar Pura Asambagh.
Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal alleged the violence was the failure of the state home department, adding that ministers were "deliberately making provocative speeches" over the last few days. People of all religions coexist in harmony in Nagpur, which is the city of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, he said.
"Tensions in the city, stone pelting and arson are the utter failure of the home department. In the last few days, state ministers have been deliberately making provocative speeches to incite violence in society. It looks like those efforts have found success in Nagpur," he said in a statement. "Nagpur always has a history of peace. I appeal to all my brothers to maintain peace. Do not believe rumours and do not come on roads," the Nagpur MP said in a video message.
