Thunderstorms accompanied by rain to sweep Delhi today

Delhi saw relief from intense heat as rain and thunderstorms brought cooler weather. The IMD issued a yellow alert for May 8th, forecasting continued showers. Temperatures will stay around 35 degrees Celsius. Air quality is moderate; relief may last until May 11th.

Accompanied by strong surface winds, ranging from 30 to 40 km/h and gusting up to 50 km/h, residents can expect a further dip in temperatures. The maximum temperature is anticipated to hover around 35 degrees Celsius, with the minimum likely to drop to about 28 degrees Celsius. Due to these conditions, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for May 8, urging the public to take necessary precautions.

Residents of Delhi woke up to a welcome change in weather today, with the city enjoying a break from the stifling heat that has gripped the region in recent weeks Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall and thunderstorms for the national capital on Thursday.

After enduring intense temperatures towards the end of April, Delhi was blessed with significant rainfall and thunderstorms on May 2, offering much-needed relief. Since then, the weather has remained noticeably cooler, with intermittent drizzles and a drop in maximum temperatures providing a refreshing change from the usual scorching heat.

IMD’s weekly weather forecast for Delhi

The respite from the heat is expected to last until at least May 11, as thunderstorms and rainfall, combined with lower maximum temperatures, will continue to provide relief. The IMD predicts that thunderstorms, strong winds, and rain will persist until May 9, with cloudy skies expected on Thursday. Maximum temperatures during this period are forecast to remain between 31 degrees Celsius and 36 degrees Celsius, keeping the oppressive heat at bay.

Air quality remains ‘Moderate’ in national capital

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remains in the ‘moderate’ category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) measured at 148 at 7 am on Thursday, slightly higher than the 132 recorded at the same time the previous day. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that the AQI across Delhi-NCR has also shifted to the ‘moderate’ or ‘satisfactory’ category. At 4 pm on May 7, Delhi’s 24-hour average AQI stood at 152.
