TNPL: R Ashwin-led Dindigul Dragons accused of ball-tempering
Dindigul Dragons skipper R Ashwin finds himself embroiled in another controversy in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
New Delhi:Â
Ravichandran Ashwin just can’t keep himself away from the spotlight. Days after going viral for his animated outburst against an on-field umpire in a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), the former India cricketer has found himself embroiled in another controversy.
Following the outburst, Ashwin was sanctioned, and things could get even worse for the Dindigul Dragons skipper.
Complaint filed against Dindigul Dragons:
“They have filed a complaint, which we have acknowledged. Though they have to lodge any complaints within 24 hours of the game, we have still accepted it and have asked them to furnish proof of their allegations. We will be forming an independent committee if we find there is any truth to their allegations.
“Without sufficient evidence, it is wrong to put forth such allegations against a player and another franchise. If they don’t provide any evidence, then Madurai will face due sanctions,” Prasanna told The Indian Express.
The Madurai franchise COO S Mahesh, in a letter addressed to TNPL, accused Dindigul of tampering with the ball, “using towels that appeared to have been treated with chemicals.”
Regarding the issue of using the towels, Prasanna clarified that the TNPL has allowed the use of towels due to the league’s scheduling, which coincides with the monsoon season in Tamil Nadu. The towels to dry the balls, however, can only be used in front of the umpires.
Recently, Ashwin was fined 30 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent during Dindigul’s fixture against the Tiruppur Tamizhans.
According to a report in the Indian Express, Ashwin and his team have been accused of ball-tampering by the Siechem Madurai Panthers, one of the eight franchises in the TNPL. The Panthers have filed a complaint about the alleged ball-tampering during their match with the defending champions on Saturday, 14 June, in Salem.
In response, TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan dismissed any immediate suggestion of foul play and asked the Madurai Panthers to present concrete evidence to back their claims against Ashwin and the Dindigul franchise.
