Stormy spell to continue in north India, Delhi pollution level to drop

Weather today: Contrasting weather patterns are set to impact India on Monday, with the IMD forecasting severe heatwaves in some regions and thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds in others, driven by western disturbances and cyclonic circulation.

New Delhi

The weather across India continues to fluctuate sharply, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting contrasting conditions for different states on Monday. While some regions will reel under severe heatwaves, others are likely to witness thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall due to the influence of western disturbances and cyclonic circulation.

Cloudy skies and dust storms likely in Delhi, UP, Bihar

Partly cloudy skies are forecast in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and adjoining parts of Rajasthan. IMD says light rainfall and dust storms with wind speeds reaching 40–50 km/h may bring slight relief, causing a marginal dip in temperatures. Delhi is expected to record a maximum of 42°C and a minimum of 24°C. A yellow alert has been issued in the national capital for the next five days. Thunderstorms and gusty winds have helped lower the city’s air pollution levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 179, as per the daily bulletin.

Intense heat grips Rajasthan

Rajasthan continues to battle extreme heat, with Pilani and Ganganagar recording the highest temperatures at 46.2°C on Sunday—well above normal. Churu reported 45.8°C, while other parts like Bikaner, Kota and Jaipur recorded temperatures above 44°C. IMD suggests some relief may come as weather patterns begin to shift slightly in the coming days.

UP braces for heatwave in west, storms in east

In Uttar Pradesh, the weather will vary across regions. While western UP will continue to face heatwave conditions, the eastern parts are likely to experience light rain and thunder. Winds may blow at 40–50 km/h. In Lucknow and surrounding areas, maximum temperatures may hover between 40–42°C.

Rain likely in parts of Punjab, Haryana

Parts of Punjab and Haryana may witness light rainfall and dust storms on Monday. While overall weather remains dry and hot, these areas could see a slight drop in temperature, offering brief relief. The maximum is likely to range between 41°C and 43°C.

Thunderstorms, rainfall alert in Bihar

IMD has also issued an alert for rain and thunderstorms in several districts of Bihar. Heavy showers are expected in Supaul, Darbhanga, Kishanganj, Katihar and Purnia. A yellow alert has been issued for parts of southeastern Bihar as well.
