Siddhu’s ‘Indian Tupac’ dream and emulation of gangster culture
American rapper Tupac has come to symbolise hip hop culture for many aspiring artists around the world, but associating with his art comes with baggage of its own. In what turned out to be prophetic, Sidhu Moose Wala too was killed due to gang related rivalries and violence, just like his idol Tupac.

It was not unknown that Punjabi musical legend Sidhu Moose Wala was heavily influenced by American rapper Tupac. He tried to emulate his idol, as is often the case in rap music, and from his cadence, style of lyricism, and dressing sense, Sidhu tried to make his own imagery.
Sadly another important aspect of the Tupac lore is the gang violence that comes with his legacy, something that Sidhu Moose Wala too inherent towards the end of his life and career.

This idolisation of Tupac by Sidhu Moosewala was known to many of his fans. This relationship was explored in a latest documentary about the hit Punjabi singer, which delves into not just his life but his controversial death at the hands of alleged gang members.
In the documentary Sidhu’s early collaborator, influential music producer with whom Sidhu made many of his early hits, Byg Byrd, also talked about Sidhu’s obsession with the Tupac story. He attested to this dream of Siddhu to become ‘Indian Tupac’, and as someone who was influential in during the early days of Sidhu’s career, this attestation is important.
Moose Wala himself talked about his emulation of Tupac in an interview, which was featured in the BBC documentary. In it he says, “He (Tupac) sang freestyle and always spoke his mind,” further adding, “he gathered his community through his writing.”
Moose Wala was thus clearly inspired by Tupac and as the documentary points this led to an association not just with his music but with gang violence as well. In what turned out to be prophetic, Moose Wala too was killed due to gang related rivalries and violence, just like his idol Tupac.
The BBC Eye Investigations documentary traces the life and journey of Sidhu Moose Wala, from early days of fame to eventual death. It features interviews with his friends, associates and enemies, in an attempt to figure out the truth of his eventual killing.
