Shubman Gill or Rishabh Pant? Indian selectors still undecided over Test captaincy despite informal talks with duo

India vs England: The hottest debate which is going on since the retirement of Rohit Sharma is the appointment of Team India's new Test skipper.

New Delhi:

The hottest debate which is going on since the retirement of Rohit Sharma is the appointment of Team India’s new Test skipper. While many names have come to the fore but the Indian selectors have failed to finalise a player till now.

Names of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah have been doing the rounds for a while since Rohit decided to quit the format. While Bumrah’s name seems to be sidelined due to his injury-prone nature, Gill and Pant appear to be the two front-runners.

According to a report in Sky Sports, despite having informal talks with both Gill and Pant who are vying to become India’s next Test captain, the BCCI has failed to shortlist a name and still remain undecided.

The summer series for India, which features five Test matches, begins on June 20 in England and with just about a month remaining for their first assignment, the BCCI seems to be on the verge of naming a skipper, maybe in a week’s time.

India squad to come this week?

Additionally, the report also mentions that Rohit wanted to play in the England series  and quit midway but the selectors were against it. They told him to participate in the series under a new captain as they wanted consistency for the five-match series.

Rohit, instead decided to retire from the longest format, bidding adieu to a 14-year-old career.

As per multiple media reports, the BCCI is expected to announce the new captain as well as the squad for the five-match series in this week. Both the decisions have been delayed by at least a week.

The report further suggests that the Indian selectors are divided over the appointment of the new skipper with some favouring Gill over pant while the others favouring the wicketkeeper-batter over the dashing player.
