Failure to adapt quickly to conditions contributed to SRH’s failure to qualify for IPL 2025 play

SRH defeated LSG by six wickets on Monday but are eighth in the IPL 2025 standings among 10 teams with nine points from 12 matches.

New Delhi:

Sunrisers Hyderabad might have got too carried away with their ultra-aggressive batting template that contributed to their inability to advance to the play-offs of IPL 2025, believes head coach Daniel Vettori.

Hyderabad have three of the top scores made by any team, with their 286/6 against Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing edition being the highest total in IPL’s history.

SRH defeated Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets on Monday but are eighth in the standings among 10 teams with nine points from 12 matches. And no matter how they fare in their remaining two league stage games, they have been knocked out of the play-offs race.

“People have talked about it, that obviously we came into the year with a reputation of being aggressive, and then the first game we made 280, and there was talk of that continuing on.

But that over aggressive to blast opponents out of matches might have led to their downfall as in conditions not suited for unstinting hitting, they have struggled to score consistently throughout the campaign.

The former left-arm spinner pointed out that adaptability has been a major issue for the SRH batting line-up that includes Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.

“I think for us it’s just learning about conditions and understanding how we play in those certain conditions, and a few times we’ve been tripped up by them,” Vettori said after their win on Monday in Lucknow.

“Probably (we) haven’t adapted as quickly as we want and played a game that wasn’t suited to those sort of wickets, so that’s the major learning, and today was a good example of that, that we could be aggressive in the power play, but then through those middle stages, we had to bat responsibility and take certain options, so I think that’s a really pleasing factor for us,” Vettori reflected.
