Asha Bhosle:

Legendary singers and sisters Asha Bhosle and Lata mangeshkar shared a relationship that has been extensively discussed over the years. While they were bound by family ties, they were also competitors in the world of playback singing. Recently, Asha recalled how Lata maintained a professional demeanour when they met outside but spoke to her freely at home. She also revealed the reason behind their preference for wearing white sarees.

Speaking on Amrita Rao and RJ Anmol’s podcast Couple of Things, Asha shared, “We would wear white sarees in those days. Didi (Lata Mangeshkar) and I both would wear white sarees. We would white saree looks good on our colour, aur colour pehne ge toh aur kale dikhege (If we were other colours, we would look more dark). Later, I started wearing pink sarees and didi would give me a side-eye but I started wearing colours with pink.”

Discussing her dynamic with Lata Mangeshkar inside and outside their home, Asha revealed, “Didi would be very normal at home. She would talk to me very formally and softly outside but wouldn’t talk like that at home. We had a relation at home, we would talk in Marathi. But she would to Lata Mangeshkar as soon as she would step out of the house.”

She added, “There was no relation between us when it came to singing. She was Lata Mangeshkar outside and she had her own status outside. Ghar pe baat hote thi par bahar baat vaat karn matlab…(She would talk to us home but not outside).”
