Prateik Babbar opens up on not inviting father Raj Babbar

The actor revealed that the choice stemmed not from estrangement or resentment but from a desire to honour the memory and legacy of his late mother, the legendary Smita Patil

New Delhi:

Prateik and actress Priya Banerjee tied the knot earlier this year in a private ceremony on Valentine’s Day. The venue was significant as it was held in the very same home that Smita Patil had bought with hopes of raising her son in it. For Prateik, marrying there was not only symbolic but a way to keep his mother present in spirit during a pivotal moment in his life.

Actor Prateik Babbar recently broke his silence on a personal decision that raised many eyebrows; of his father, veteran actor Raj Babbar, not being invited to his wedding. In a heartfelt conversation, the actor revealed that the choice stemmed not from estrangement or resentment but from a desire to honour the memory and legacy of his late mother, the legendary Smita Patil.

A difficult but necessary call

He further talks about the complexities his father’s wife and his mother had, and of things that have been said in the press about 38-40 years ago. He felt it would have been uncomfortable, perhaps even disrespectful, to hold space for both relationships in the same room.

His actions, however, tend to upset and create tensions between his half-siblings and his father. He reveals that, as much as he wanted things to be subtle, people are impulsive, which often leads to matters going south.

Addressing why his father and half-siblings were absent from the ceremony, Prateik said it was less about conflict and more about emotional clarity. He admitted that the complicated history involving his parents, especially the fact that Raj Babbar returned to his first wife, Nadira Babbar, shortly after Smita Patil’s death, made it emotionally sensitive to involve that part of the family in an event so centered around his mother’s memory.

While acknowledging that his decision may have hurt feelings, Prateik emphasized it wasn’t made out of bitterness. He expressed remorse over any pain it might have caused and shared that he hopes to heal and reconnect with his father in time. For now, though, he stands by his decision to keep the wedding focused on celebrating love, both his own and the enduring presence of his mother in his life.
