A few days back, after the release of Akshay Kumar starrer Kesari: Chapter 2, the film found itself embroiled in a plagiarism controversy. A YouTuber and poet, Yahya Bootwala, claimed that the filmmakers had used lines from his original poem about Jallianwala Bagh without his permission.

Chapter 2 has been performing well and minted Rs 65.6 crore in India net and earned Rs 93.5 crore worldwide. Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi and produced by Dharma Productions, the film is a historical courtroom drama that revolves around the life of C. Sankaran Nair, a lawyer who challenged the British Empire following the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

“As writers, the worst thing you can do to a fellow writer is pick their material up, blatantly use it without giving credit, and this is what I feel dialogue writer @sumit.saxena.35912 has done here,” he added.

He wrote on Instagram, “So sent me a clip 4 days back from the movie Kesari 2 of dialogues he felt were copied from my poem, titled Jallianwala Bagh, published 5 years ago on @unerasepoetry YouTube channel. Here are the two clips, and honestly, this is a clear copy-paste, and it’s not like they’ve tried to hide it as well, matlab phusphusana jaisa shabd bhi uthaya hai.”

Earlier, he accused the film’s dialogue writer, Sumit Saxena, of plagiarising his work. He shared a video juxtaposing his poem performance with a scene from the film in which Ananya Panday delivers strikingly similar dialogues.

Taking to Instagram, Yahya Bootwala confirmed, “So dosto, the producers and I have managed to amicably solve the issue in the best interest of both parties. Thank you guys for your support in these 2 days, you guys have been very kind.”
