PM Modi to inaugurate India’s first vertical lift sea bridge in Rameswaram today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate India's first vertical lift sea bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu on Sunday The new Pamban Bridge, a significant engineering feat costing ₹550 crore, boasts a 72.5m vertical lift span allowing uninterrupted train service.

New Delhi:

The newly-constructed Pamban Bridge is connecting Rameswaran to the mainland. It is a major engineering achievement constructed at a cost of Rs 550 crore. The bridge is more than 2 kilometre (2.08km in length) and features 72.5 vertical lift span that can rise up to 17 metres without disrupting train service, which makes it a unique aspect of this bridge. Trains can travel at a speed of 75 kmph.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (April 6) will inaugurate India’s first vertical lift sea bridge in Rameswaram along with many other dedicated projects. This will be after the conclusion of his three-day visit to Sri Lanka. He will inaugurate the new Pamban Rail Bridge around noon and flag off  the new train service for Rameswaram-Tambaram route (for Chennai).

The bridge also has a historic significance to India’s epic mythology Ramayana, where the construction of Ram Setu was initiated from Dhanushkodi near Rameswaram.

It is constructed with stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints and high-graded protective paint. It will accommodate dual rail tracks looking at the future demands. The benefit of being prepared with polysiloxane will prevent the bridge from corrosion and that should ensure its longevity in the severe marine environment.

The orginial Pamban bridge was constructed in 1914 by British engineers. In this, a cantilever was used with a Scherzer Rolling Lift span, connecting Rameswaram Island with mainland India. This bridge served as a primary connective way for pilgrims, traders and tourists for more than a century.

The new Pamban Bridge was constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways overcoming several challenges, including environmental obstacles to logistical complexities, the Palk Strait’s turbulent waters, strong winds, and unpredictable weather patterns created difficulties in the construction process, as per news agency PTI.

PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for various rail and road projects in Tamil Nadu, which are worth over Rs 8,300 crore. The list of projectes include four-laning of 28 Km long Walajapet – Ranipet section of NH-40, 4-laned 29 Km long Viluppuram – Puducherry section of NH-332; 57 Km long Poondiyankuppam – Sattanathapuram section of NH-32 and 48 Km long Cholapuram – Thanjavur section of NH-36.
