OpenAI makes Codex free for all ChatGPT users

OpenAI has made Codex, its AI coding tool, available to all ChatGPT users, including free and Plus tiers, starting June 4, 2025. The tool assists with coding, debugging, and testing, integrating with GitHub and offering optional internet access.

New Delhi:

The move comes after OpenAI introduced optional internet connectivity into Codex for tasks where packages or external data are needed. This move is designed to provide benefits to developers, students and hobbyists, regardless of whether they are on a paid or free plan. OpenAI points out that during high demand, they may reduce usage rates for some users to ensure the service remains available to many. Many developers are excited about the move, as they eagerly explore what Codex can do.

Codex, an advanced AI coding agent from OpenAI, can now be used by ChatGPT users, regardless of their plan. Previously, only those with a Pro, Team or Enterprise subscription could access this tool, but now anyone can use it. Codex helps software engineers by writing code, fixing issues and running tests. The rollout started on Monday, and OpenAI stated that it is dedicated to helping everyone use AI tools. Enhanced features and safety

Now, Codex is able to go online during task execution, making it easier to install required tools or obtain necessary data. Safety is a key concern for OpenAI, so Codex has been designed to block harmful commands while helping with legitimate tasks. The agent includes voice-driven commands and can update your pull requests, helping make your workflows easier. Some companies, for example, Cisco and Temporal, have reported that Codex helps developers by automating regular chores and allowing them to focus on tough problems.

A game-changer for developers

Codex uses the codex-1 model, making it a version of OpenAI’s o3 AI designed for software development. It runs on a secure cloud platform, allowing users to import code from GitHub. Developers can easily assign work such as creating features or fixing bugs by using ChatGPT. The amount of time taken for a task depends on its difficulty, and it can be anywhere from 1 minute to 30 minutes. The codex-mini-latest model was introduced by OpenAI to make edits and queries quicker, and it can be used through both API and CLI.

What’s next for Codex?

OpenAI wants to make Codex easier to use with many developer tools such as CI and issue trackers. Codex is designed to encourage teamwork, instead of just being a tool used alone. OpenAI has not added paid plans so far, but it is possible that down the road, more intensive users will need to pay. Developers at all skill levels can try out Codex now, which marks a fresh beginning for AI in programming.
