OpenAI adds GPT-4.1 & GPT-4.1 mini to ChatGPT

OpenAI has added GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini to ChatGPT, bringing better performance in coding and long-form tasks. Paid users can now access GPT-4.1, while free users will switch to 4.1 mini after crossing daily GPT-4o limits. The new update focuses on precision, speed, and long-context handling.

New Delhi:

GPT-4.1 isn’t a brand-new model, but it’s got some key improvements that matter, especially for developers and users looking for more precise, less “chatty” outputs. It’s designed to follow instructions more accurately, build user interfaces better, and write less redundant code than its earlier versions.

It’s been exactly one month since OpenAI introduced GPT-4.1 in the API. Now, the upgraded model is finally coming to ChatGPT. On May 15, OpenAI quietly rolled out GPT-4.1 access inside the ChatGPT model picker for all paid users. This includes ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Enterprise and Edu accounts will get the update in the coming weeks.

GPT-4.1 now in ChatGPT: Who gets it?

OpenAI says that GPT-4.1 is now available for selection under the “more models” dropdown in ChatGPT’s model picker. It’s already live for paid tiers like Plus, Pro, and Team. Free users won’t see it in their regular use, but once they hit the GPT-4o usage cap, they’ll be switched to GPT-4.1 mini, which has now replaced GPT-4o mini.

For those on Enterprise or education accounts, the company says GPT-4.1 support will roll out in the next few weeks.

What GPT-4.1 brings to the table

In addition to GPT-4.1, the company is also pushing GPT-4.1 mini to all users, replacing the older GPT-4o mini. GPT-4.1 mini is lighter, faster, and more accurate at simple tasks. It will act as a fallback model for free users once they’ve crossed their daily GPT-4o quota.

One big tech feature users might care about is long context. Just like its API version, GPT-4.1 in ChatGPT can handle prompts and files up to 1 million tokens long. That means it can read and work on massive documents or even entire codebases hosted on GitHub.

According to OpenAI, GPT-4.1 is a specialist model made with coding in mind. It’s better at tasks that need careful instruction-following, such as web development or backend scripting. Developers using GPT-4.1 in the API had already noticed that the model is a bit more direct and tends to skip unnecessary fluff in responses. That’s now coming to the general ChatGPT interface.

A model built for developers (but helpful for others too)

OpenAI says this launch is about unlocking “new possibilities” for smarter tools. “By focusing closely on real-world developer needs, ranging from coding to instruction-following and long context understanding, these models unlock new possibilities,” the company said.

While some may find the improvement over GPT-4o subtle, it’s still another step closer to more useful, agent-like AI tools. If you’ve been waiting for GPT-5, this may not be that, but it does set the tone for where OpenAI seems to be heading next.

Early feedback suggests that GPT-4.1 is more useful for those who want to get things done quickly. For example, if you ask it to generate UI components or refactor long blocks of code, you’re likely to get clean, quick answers.
