Oakley | Meta smart glasses launching June 20

Meta and Oakley are set to launch new smart glasses on June 20, aimed at athletes and action use. The glasses will feature a centre-mounted camera, differing from Meta’s casual Ray-Ban model.

New Delhi:

The new Oakley version is likely to be aimed at outdoor enthusiasts and sportsmen, unlike the casual Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. These glasses, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, will feature a centre-mounted action-style camera, which is perfect to use during sports activities and on-the-go recordings. This design is an indication of a change to a more active and practical design.

Meta seems to be willing to increase its range of wearable tech with one more pair of smart glasses by Oakley. This week a verified Instagram account called ‘Oakley | Meta’ appeared and teased a product launch on Friday, June 20. This announcement is the next step of Meta in the smart glasses industry after the successful partnership with Ray-Ban.

Google and Apple join

Google is not sitting back. It has also announced new collaborations with fashion eyewear companies such as Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, and Kering Eyewear. The glasses will be powered by the Android XR platform, and this will introduce increased competition in the space. Apple are said to be rushing to the market with their very own smart glasses.

Meta pushes further into wearables

The previous launch of smart glasses by Meta in collaboration with Ray-Ban was successful, as more than 2 million units have been sold already. By the end of 2026, the company currently targets manufacturing 10 million units annually. The growing popularity of AI wearables has contributed to the increased adoption, and Meta appears to be riding the wave with Oakley.

Apple plans premium AI-powered glasses

Bloomberg reported that Apple is planning to release its first-generation smart glasses towards the end of 2026. Later this year, the company will start making prototypes in large volumes, spearheaded by the Vision Products Group that brought the Vision Pro headset to the market. The features that were predicted to be included are real-time translation, voice control with Siri, scene recognition and turn-by-turn navigation. They will probably be equipped with built-in cameras, microphones and speakers, and sources say a more polished version of what Meta has to offer.
