Netflix reveals new ‘Stranger Things’ animated series in works
The hit show is reportedly getting a animated spinoff ‘Tales From '85’
New Delhi:
Time for fans of the hit TV series Stranger Things to rejoice. Netflix revealed the first details of the new Stranger Things animated spinoff, titled Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 at a panel at the Annecy film festival on Wednesday. The platform also announced its hot awards-season contender In Your Dreams.
New ‘Stranger Things’ spinoff announced
The animated expansion of the Stranger Things universe will be set in Hawkins “in the stark winter of 1985” between seasons 2 and 3 of the original series. It is set to feature the show’s original characters fighting “new monsters and unravel[ing] a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town.” The new spinoff though is expected to have one more addition, that of Nikki, a tough, mohawk-wearing girl.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are slated to executive produce the animated series. They are to do this through their Upside Down Pictures production banner, along with Upside Down’s Hilary Leavitt, and Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via 21 Laps. Eric Robles will executive produce via Flying Bark Productions. He would also be reportedly acting as the showrunner for this spinoff series.
Of the inspiration behind this new spinoff series, the makers said that Saturday morning cartoons of the ’80s era in the US are major markers that influenced the making of this new Stranger Things spinoff. Be it Masters of the Universe, Scooby-Doo, Dungeons and Dragons, The Real Ghostbusters, these shows where “in a few episodes were really dark and really creepy” act as major inspirations and the new show’s “north star.”
Australia’s Flying Bark, which did animation work on Marvel’s What If…? series, Netflix’s Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie and the upcoming Paramount Pictures film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will act as the animation studio for Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
