NHAI to launch traffic trials for key connectivity tunnels connecting Gurugram
Traffic trials have begun for two new tunnels connecting Dwarka Expressway to IGI Airport and NH-48, aiming to ease Gurugram’s congestion. Spanning 5.1km, the tunnels will improve regional connectivity. Authorities urge commuters to adopt the new route.
Gurugram:
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has scheduled the initial test run between 12 PM and 3 PM, using this limited timeframe to monitor traffic flow and pinpoint any operational challenges. Authorities plan to gradually extend the trial period as conditions stabilise.
Traffic trials are set to begin tomorrow for two newly built tunnels linking the Dwarka Expressway to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and National Highway 48, in a move expected to ease long-standing congestion on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and significantly improve connectivity between Gurugram, Dwarka, and the airport.
Tunnels on Dwarka Expressway divided in 2 main sections
Spanning a total of 5.1 kilometres, the tunnel system is divided into two main sections. The first, a major eight-lane tunnel measuring 3.6 kilometres, provides direct access from the Dwarka Expressway to IGI Airport. The second, a smaller two-lane tunnel of 1.5 kilometres, connects the expressway to NH-48 towards Gurugram.
The tunnels form part of the fourth phase of the Rs 9,000-crore Dwarka Expressway project, which stretches 29 kilometres from Mahipalpur in Delhi to Kherki Daula in Gurugram. Of the total length, 18.9 kilometres lie within Haryana and the remaining 10.1 kilometres fall under Delhi’s jurisdiction.
In the lead-up to the trial, senior NHAI officials, alongside traffic authorities from both Delhi and Gurugram have carried out joint inspections of the site. Although construction is now complete, the tunnels still require formal clearance from the highways authority before full-scale operations can commence.
All construction & technical preparations completed
All construction and technical preparations have been completed ahead of the trial. The tunnels, equipped with full electrical, mechanical and civil systems, are part of a larger infrastructure push to improve mobility across the National Capital Region.
To support the rollout, Gurugram traffic police have advised airport-bound commuters to use the new route via the Dwarka Expressway. Drivers approaching from Jaipur, Sohna, or the Southern Peripheral Road are also being encouraged to take advantage of the new link for a faster and smoother route to the airport.
