Mumbai reports highest numbers of COVID-19 cases as Maharashtra

Maharashtra saw a slight rise in COVID-19 cases, totalling 597 this year, mainly due to seasonal infections. Mumbai leads with 27 cases. Most are mild, thanks to vaccination and immunity. Testing continues, with symptoms similar to flu but distinct loss of smell.

Mumbai

At present, there are 425 active COVID-19 cases across the state. A total of 165 individuals have recovered since January, while seven deaths linked to the virus have been reported. Data from the state health department shows that six of the deceased had existing medical conditions.

Maharashtra has recorded a mild increase in COVID-19 cases, with 76 new infections reported on Thursday, bringing the state’s total for the year to 597. Mumbai accounted for the highest number of fresh cases, registering 27, followed by Pune with 21, Thane with 12, and Kalyan with eight. Other areas including Navi Mumbai, Kolhapur, Ahilyanagar, and Raigad reported only isolated cases.

Current surge in cases attributed to weather shift and seasonal respiratory infections

Most of the new infections are either asymptomatic or involve only mild symptoms. The widespread coverage of vaccination and immunity developed from previous waves appear to be playing a significant role in reducing the severity of cases.

Health authorities have attributed the recent increase to seasonal patterns typically observed during the monsoon onset, which often sees a spike in respiratory infections. The current COVID-19 trend is being regarded as part of this broader seasonal shift rather than an indicator of a larger outbreak.

COVID-19 symptoms similar to common influenza

Symptoms of COVID-19 are now frequently similar to those of common influenza, including fever, sore throat, fatigue, and coughing. However, loss of taste or smell remains more commonly associated with coronavirus infections. In some instances, recent flu cases have produced more pronounced symptoms than those caused by COVID-19.

Since the beginning of 2025, nearly 9,600 COVID-19 tests have been carried out across Maharashtra, with continued surveillance efforts focused particularly on urban centres such as Mumbai. Despite the recent uptick, the overall situation remains stable with no immediate signs of a wider health threat.
