Mumbai-Konkan-Goa RoRo ferry service still in plans, despite uncertain timeline

The proposed Mumbai-Konkan-Goa RoRo ferry, inspired by the successful Mumbai-Alibaug route, is still in early stages. A feasibility study is ongoing, with approvals pending. It promises quicker travel, especially during Ganeshotsav, and aims to ease road congestion.

Mumbai:

As per a Free Press Journal report, according to those associated with the existing RoRo service between Ferry Wharf in Mazgaon and Mandwa near Alibaug, only after the study is completed will the project proceed to a trial phase. The success of the current Mandwa route has highlighted the benefits of sea-based travel, offering passengers a brisk one-hour ferry ride as a more efficient alternative to the usual 3.5-hour, 111-kilometre road journey.

The much-anticipated Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ferry service connecting Mumbai with the Konkan coast and Goa continues to remain a work in progress, with no definitive timeline for its launch. While the concept has generated significant public interest, particularly among frequent travellers to the Konkan belt, the project is still undergoing a detailed route feasibility study. Project remains at preliminary stage

Unlike many other forms of public transport, RoRo ferries also have the unique advantage of operating even during the monsoon season, adding to their reliability and appeal.

However, despite the clear advantages and public enthusiasm, authorities have clarified that the project remains at a preliminary stage. It still requires several official approvals and environmental clearances before it can move forward.

Similar extension on Konkan and Goa regions

As per the same FPJ report, officials suggest that a similar extension to the Konkan and Goa regions could be particularly impactful during the Ganeshotsav season, when thousands make the journey to their hometowns along the western coastline.

Notably, each year, both rail and road transport systems are heavily burdened during the festive rush. A RoRo ferry could provide a vital alternative, easing congestion and offering travellers the added convenience of taking their vehicles along.
