Mumbai:Â
A 50-year-old mother is recovering in hospital after bravely throwing herself between her son and a knife-wielding attacker during a violent altercation outside their home late on Wednesday night. The shocking incident took place in Bheem Nagar, a densely populated residential pocket of Borivli West, where longstanding tensions between neighbours boiled over into bloodshed.
Sunita Salve was left seriously injured after she tried to defend her 25-year-old son from an alleged assailant, a 28-year-old bus driver employed by BEST and living in the same area. According to police, the suspect launched the assault after spotting the young man speaking to his sister, a matter that had reportedly sparked previous arguments.
Maternal instincts! Mother grabs knife with bare hand to save son’s life
Investigations have revealed a history of friction between the two families, particularly surrounding the accused’s disapproval of the Salve family’s interaction with his sister. Police confirmed that a verbal dispute had occurred just days prior, setting the stage for the violent confrontation.
Driven by anger and earlier disputes, the accused is said to have stormed to the Salves’ home shortly before midnight, demanding an explanation. As Salve and her son stepped out to confront him, the man allegedly pulled out a knife and lunged at the young man’s abdomen.
In a split-second act of maternal instinct, Salve reached out to grab the blade with her bare hands, attempting to deflect the blow. The knife sliced through her palm, severing a vein between her thumb and index finger. Neighbours who heard the commotion rushed to help and quickly transported the bleeding woman to Nair Hospital, where she remains under medical supervision.
Accused arrested on charges of attempted murder
Officers from Borivali police station, including Assistant Police Inspector Devidas Gajre and PSI Indrajeet Patil, launched a manhunt soon after the attack. The accused had fled the scene but was tracked down and arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning.
He was later produced in the Borivli metropolitan magistrate court and has been remanded in police custody for two days. A case of attempted murder has been registered, and further investigations are underway.
