Misled by Google Maps, car hangs mid-air

The car, a Lucknow-registered vehicle owned by Haris Siddiqui of Ramgarh (Gorakhpur), was later removed with the help of crane.

Maharajganj:

The car driver, who was heading from Nepal towards Gorakhpur in a high speed, was using Google Maps on his mobile phone to get directions. However, the digital map led him to an unfinished flyover near Bhaiya, Pharenda village along the Gorakhpur-Sonauli national highway. As there were no warning signs, or barricades or diversion indicators to caution the incoming vehicles, the car ended up dangling from the unfinished flyover. The driver quickly applied the brakes and managed to come out of the vehicle, escaping unhurt.

A car, being navigated using Google Maps app, ended up hanging mid-air from the edge of an under-construction flyover in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj. The incident took place around 1 am on Sunday. The person who was driving the car had escaped unhurt.

This is not the first such incident. Earlier in November last year, three men were killed after their drove off an under construction flyover and plunged into a river in Bihar’s Faridpur while relying on directions from the navigation app. The deceased were on their way from Noida to Faridpur in Bareilly to attend a wedding. Google Maps directed the driver onto the unfinished bridge, which had a section collapsed from earlier flood damage. The bridge did not have any barriers or warning signs. Following the incident, four engineers and a Google Maps official were booked.

The car, a Lucknow-registered vehicle owned by Haris Siddiqui of Ramgarh (Gorakhpur), was later removed with the help of crane. The driver, who was lone occupant, reportedly sustained minor injuries in the incident.
