Karun Nair’s heroics in vain as Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 12 runs in thriller

Karun Nair's exceptional knock of 89 runs off 40 balls went in vain as Mumbai Indians held their nerves to clinch a thrilling 12-run victory against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025 on Sunday.

New Delhi:

It was that Jasprit Bumrah over again, but this time, it wasn’t the pacer’s bowling brilliance that turned the game around for the Mumbai Indians (MI).

Three run-outs on three consecutive deliveries in the penultimate over from Bumrah cost Delhi Capitals (DC) the game as they succumbed under pressure to suffer a close 12-run defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, April 13.

Rohit fails, but MI batters come good against DC

Earlier, the Mumbai Indians’ batting line-up fired as a unit to help the visitors post a strong total of 205 runs on the board in 20 overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Asked to bat first, openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton got MI off to a good start with a 47-run stand for the first wicket.

Rohit played some cracking shots en route to his 18 off 12 but failed to convert his start into a big score as he was trapped lbw by Vipraj Nigam in the 5th over. The Hitman’s struggles continued as he was dismissed cheaply once again. Rickelton slammed 41 off 25 balls before getting cleaned up by Kuldeep Yadav, who provided a crucial breakthrough for DC after the Powerplay.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma continued their fine form as the duo played crucial knocks of 40 and 59 runs, respectively, to share a vital 60-run stand for the third wicket. Naman Dhir dazzled in the finisher’s role with a blistering cameo of unbeaten 38 off 17 balls to propel MI past the 200-run mark. Barring Rohit, it was a combined effort from the MI batting line-up on a good wicket in Delhi.

With the win, Mumbai Indians managed to bring an end to their two-match losing streak with their second victory of the season while DC slipped to their first defeat in IPL 2025.

Sent as an Impact Sub after DC lost opener Jake Fraser McGurk on a duck on the very first ball of their run-chase, Nair played an exceptional knock to put his side back on track. Playing his first IPL game after three years, Nair continued from where he had left off in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he smashed a whopping 779 runs and an astounding average of 389.5, including five centuries to turn heads.

Nair combined with Abhishek Porel (33) to add a brilliant 119-run stand for the second wicket to put DC on the driver’s seat. He continued his onslaught even after Porel’s dismissal before eventually getting undone by a special delivery from Mitchell Santner in the 12th over. However, DC were cruising at the time with 135 runs on the board, just 71 runs away from victory.

But what unfolded was proper chaos as DC lost their next 8 wickets inside 58 runs in just 7.2 overs to lose the plot and fall short in the chase. DC’s middle order collapsed as spinners Santner and Karn Sharma helped MI stage a comeback with five wickets between them. Three run outs in the 19th over meant DC were bundled out for 193 runs to lose the game by 12 runs.

Karun Nair’s terrific knock of 89 runs off just 40 balls went in vain as Delhi Capitals fell short in the 206-run chase in their first game of the season at their primary home ground – the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Nair turned the clock on his IPL debut and showcased glimpses of his Vijay Hazare form with a stellar knock that was laced with 12 fours and 5 sixes.
