With the Indian Premier League (IPL) season in full swing, multiplexes and cinemas in Bengaluru are allegedly airing live matches without proper approvals, drawing sharp criticism from Kannada film producers.

In response, the film producers’ body has urged law enforcement to ensure compliance with existing regulations. They have also called for clear directives to theatre owners, warning that violations could lead to legal repercussions. The issue underscores the ongoing struggle between cinema and sports viewership, with filmmakers demanding a fair opportunity for their releases.

They stress that with multiple Kannada films scheduled for release, such unauthorized screenings could severely dent their revenue.

Adding to these concerns, the rise in betting activities around IPL matches has also drawn attention. Authorities across Karnataka have been cracking down on illegal cricket betting, with several individuals suffering financial losses through online platforms.

The Karnataka Film Producers’ Association has filed a complaint with the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, calling for strict action against theatres broadcasting IPL matches. The association argues that several multiplexes are flouting both state and central regulations, creating an unfair playing field for local filmmakers
