IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall this weekend

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain across Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra this weekend, with an orange alert for Saturday and a red alert for Ratnagiri on Friday. Waterlogging and traffic disruptions are likely to persist into next week.

Mumbai:

The alerts stem from an upper cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is fuelling widespread rain activity across the region. The heaviest showers are expected to hit on Saturday, with orange alerts covering Mumbai, Thane, and Sindhudurg. In Ratnagiri, the weather threat is even more severe, with a red alert issued for Friday, indicating a strong possibility of extremely heavy rainfall.

The financial capital is set for a waterlogged weekend as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of rain alerts for Maharashtra, with the intensity of rainfall expected to increase steadily through the coming days. Friday has begun under a yellow alert for light to moderate rainfall across Mumbai and adjoining districts, but the situation is forecast to escalate on Saturday with orange alerts in place, signalling heavy to very heavy downpours.

IMD’s weekly weather forecast for Mumbai

Since Thursday evening, the city has been blanketed by overcast skies and intermittent rain, causing damp conditions, traffic snarls, and minor waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD expects these spells to continue throughout Friday, with more intense rainfall likely to affect both the city and its suburbs.

Mumbai weather & temperature today

As of Friday morning, temperatures in Mumbai stood at 28 degrees Celsius, accompanied by 84 per cent humidity and moderate wind speeds around 14 km/h. The thick, humid air and cloudy conditions are classic signs of the advancing monsoon, with rainfall forecast to increase in frequency and intensity later in the day. The temperature is expected to hover between 27 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius, with overcast skies prevailing. Sunset is likely around 7:16 PM.

The unsettled weather is predicted to persist into the weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday are likely to see frequent and sometimes heavy spells of rain, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. The temperature range will remain between 26 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius, with the overall atmosphere expected to remain muggy and damp.
