IMD forecasts continuous rains in Mumbai

Mumbai is seeing record May rainfall, topping 85mm, the highest since 2021. The IMD issued an orange alert, forecasting days of intense rain. Shifting winds may bring an early monsoon. The city also recorded its coldest May morning in decades.

Mumbai:

Temperatures have been fluctuating between 26 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, contributing to the atmospheric instability. Although Mumbai has only seen moderate showers in certain areas so far, a yellow alert remains in place across the city and the wider Konkan belt, with forecasts warning of persistent heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for at least four more days.

Mumbai is experiencing an unusually wet spell for May, as a low-pressure system off the Konkan coast brings widespread rain and thunderstorms to the city and its neighbouring districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised an orange alert for Thane, Pune, Nashik, Raigad, and Latur, indicating a likelihood of intense rainfall in the coming days.

Unusual rainy pattern in Mumbai; IMD’s weekly forecast

The city has already received over 85 mm of rainfall this month, defying the typically hot and dry conditions that define the pre-monsoon season. Rainfall began as early as May 6 and has since been accompanied by frequent thunderstorms and strong winds. According to observatory data, Colaba has recorded 85.2 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz has registered 47.4 mm, making this Mumbai’s wettest May since 2021.

Coldest May morning in Mumbai since 1951

Meteorologists have attributed this early onset of rainfall to shifting wind patterns, a recognised but irregular feature of summer weather in the region. However, what makes this year stand out is the duration and consistency of the rain, which has persisted across multiple weeks, an unusual occurrence during May.

The abrupt change in weather has also led to a noticeable drop in temperatures. On May 8, Mumbai experienced its coldest May morning in over seven decades, with the Colaba observatory recording a low of 22.2 degrees Celsius, its lowest since 1951.

When will monsoon arrive in Mumbai?

These pre-monsoon showers are expected to influence the official arrival of the Southwest Monsoon. While Mumbai typically sees the monsoon set in around June 11, current models suggest it could reach Kerala as early as May 28. Given that the monsoon generally takes eight to ten days to advance northwards, Mumbai could witness its onset as early as the first week of June, signalling an earlier arrival than usual.
