Delhi schools to launch anti-malaria campaign to prevent seasonal spike

With monsoon nearing, Delhi schools are ramping up anti-malaria measures. The DoE mandates June activities like inspections, hygiene drives, and awareness campaigns. Aligned with India’s 2030 malaria-free goal, officials will oversee implementation to curb malaria, dengue, and chikungunya outbreaks.

New Delhi:

The move follows earlier guidelines issued in April and marks a renewed effort to prevent a seasonal spike in vector-borne diseases. Under the latest instructions, schools have been urged to conduct regular inspections for stagnant water, enforce strict hygiene protocols, and raise awareness among students and staff about the dangers posed by mosquitoes during the rainy season.

With the monsoon season fast approaching, schools across the Capital have been asked to ramp up anti-malaria initiatives in a bid to curb the annual rise in mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. In a new directive, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has called on government, government-aided, and private unaided schools to actively participate in targeted campaigns throughout June, which is nationally observed as Anti-Malaria Month.

These measures are seen as vital in preparing school communities ahead of peak transmission months.

India anticipates to become malaria free by 2030

As part of the initiative, schools are expected to carry out specific actions such as routine checks for mosquito breeding grounds, displaying educational materials on disease prevention, and conducting training sessions for both teaching and non-teaching staff to help them identify symptoms and respond appropriately.

The anti-malaria drive aligns with the country’s broader goal of eliminating malaria by 2030. Health authorities consider June a critical window for intervention, allowing early precautions to be taken before the onset of heavy rains.

Interactive sessions & student-led activities are also in plans

Through early intervention and heightened vigilance, authorities hope to reduce the health burden on families and limit disease outbreaks in educational institutions.

Interactive sessions, talks, and student-led activities are also planned to help embed precautionary behaviour among children. The DoE has outlined a comprehensive set of preventive measures focused on practical steps including sanitation, early detection of symptoms, and timely medical consultation, emphasising awareness and preparedness without causing panic.

To ensure the effectiveness of the campaign, district and zonal education officers have been tasked with monitoring its implementation, while school principals will spearhead efforts at the ground level. Each year, the arrival of the monsoon brings with it an uptick in mosquito-borne infections across Delhi.
