Traders and vendors, particularly those dealing in fruit, have taken a firm stand by boycotting Turkish goods, apples chief among them, citing national interest as the driving force behind their actions. This boycott has gained momentum beyond the capital, with markets in other states also removing Turkish produce from their stalls.

Asia’s largest wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Delhi, the Azadpur Mandi, has suspended imports of apples from Turkey, marking a significant turn in trade relations against the backdrop of rising diplomatic friction between India and Turkey. The decision follows Ankara’s vocal support for Pakistan in ongoing geopolitical disputes with India, a stance that has ignited widespread protests across the country. Despite the arrival of previously ordered consignments, no further shipments are expected to be placed, as the industry collectively distances itself from Turkish suppliers.

Decided to discontinue import of apples from Turkey: Mandi chairman

According to Kriplani, Azadpur Mandi had long prioritised Turkish apples, with imports reaching 1.16 lakh tonnes in 2024. However, he said recent developments in Turkey’s approach towards India had led to disappointment.

Azadpur Fruit Mandi chairman Meetha Ram Kriplani as per a PTI report said, “We have decided to discontinue all new imports of apples from Turkey. While consignments ordered earlier will still arrive, no further trade in apples or other produce will take place going forward.” Kriplani said that the decision was taken after a careful review of the situation, adding that no fresh orders will be placed in the future.

“We have supported Turkish trade for years, but the current circumstances have left us with no choice,” he added. According to Delhi traders associations, “Turkey’s recent political stance towards India is unacceptable and has hurt national sentiments.”
