DK Shivakumar orders demolition of buildings blocking rainwater flow
Karnataka’s Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said on Thursday that he has asked Bengaluru’s civic officials to tear down buildings that are blocking the natural flow of rainwater and causing flooding in the city. Bengaluru:
Shivakumar, who is also in charge of Bengaluru’s development, said, “The Chief Minister and I have already visited the areas hit by heavy rains. This is an important spot where the issue first started, and from there, it spread to other places.”
He also mentioned that some people who have blocked the flow of water had gotten stay orders from the courts. On top of that, even some officials were not helping to fix the issue and stop the water from flooding the area. “Because of this, I have told the officers to remove such buildings using powers under the Disaster Management Act,” he said.
Deputy CM requests landowners to cooperate
“We are not looking to destroy anyone’s home or cause trouble. I am personally checking all the places where there are problems. People have said they’re okay with the work going on. But we must fix this issue properly. We’re not removing buildings randomly. The goal is to make sure rainwater can flow freely and not cause floods. We can’t let Bengaluru’s image get damaged because of this,” he told ANI.
Shivakumar made it clear that the government does not want to hurt anyone or take away property unfairly. But he said that they must find a long-term fix so that rainwater can pass easily and not create flooding problems.
The Deputy Chief Minister had visited many areas in Bengaluru that usually flood during the rainy season. One such place was Manyata Tech Park, where stormwater drains had caused water to collect and flood parts of the area.
He also said that the Chief Commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), M Maheshwar Rao, has been given full powers to take action and remove illegal structures that are blocking water flow.
He also asked landowners to cooperate and help. “If something went wrong due to technical errors, we will give compensation. We are working on a permanent solution. Everyone is supporting us, and the work will go on,” he added.
