Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti has been appointed as the new manager of the Brazil national football team and will take charge of the Selecao later this month.
Ancelotti, who is presently managing La Liga giants Real Madrid, will leave the club at the end of the ongoing 2024-25 season before taking over as the new Brazil manager, becoming the first foreign manager for the country in over 100 years.
Carlo Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid after La Liga clash against Real Sociedad
Ancelotti will be leaving Real Madrid after their final La Liga game of the season against Real Sociedad on May 25. The 65-year-old will be taking charge of the Brazil national team from May 26. Ancelotti had one year left on his Real Madrid contract, but will be leaving the club after cordial talks between all parties to facilitate his exit.
Ancelotti was in talks to become the new Brazil manager over the last couple of months and had also met the representatives from the Brazilian Football Confederation last month. One of the most successful and experienced football managers in the world, Ancelotti will be bringing an end to a successful tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu when he leaves Real Madrid later this month.
In what was his second spell at Real Madrid, Ancelotti won the La Liga twice and also helped the club win two Champions League titles, along with two UEFA Super Cups and a Copa del Rey title. Ancelotti won a total of 15 trophies with Real Madrid across two spells as their manager, including a Champions League and La Liga double last season.
It was Real Madrid’s fourth consecutive El Clasico defeat of the season, having lost to arch-rivals Barcelona in their last three meetings earlier this season. After their 4-3 loss on Saturday, Real Madrid are in the 2nd spot on the La Liga table with 75 points from 35 matches, 7 points behind table-toppers Barcelona, who have 85 points after 35 matches this season.
However, Real Madrid have failed to impress under Ancelotti this season as they stare at finishing the season trophyless for the first time in four years. Real Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal in the quarter-finals before losing to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final. Real Madrid lost 4-3 in a thrilling El Clasico against Barcelona in the La Liga on Sunday to fall behind in the La Liga title race.
Ancelotti will take charge of the Brazil national team ahead of the start of their campaign in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and will be hoping to inspire them to glory in the FIFA World Cup next year. Brazil last won the World Cup in 2002 and have since not managed to come close to lifting their sixth title.
