Bengaluru:Â
On May 15 and 16, wind speeds may rise sharply in areas of north interior Karnataka. The IMD has warned of squall-like conditions, where winds could reach 50–60 kmph and may even gust up to 70 kmph. Bengaluru, which lies close to these regions, may also experience some of these high winds during the thunderstorms.
The IT capital of India – Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka – are likely to experience more rain and thunderstorms over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather office has predicted light to moderate showers along with lightning and gusty winds across South India, including Bengaluru, until at least Sunday.
Bengaluru weather forecast
The city is likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall during this period. Rain may be especially strong on Thursday (May 15), Friday (May 16), and into the weekend, affecting areas in and around Bengaluru. South Interior Karnataka, which includes Bengaluru, is one of the regions listed for significant rainfall, along with Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema.
A weather system known as a “cyclonic circulation” is currently present over North Interior Karnataka. This is a major reason why Bengaluru and nearby regions are experiencing wet and stormy conditions. The system is expected to remain active for the next few days, keeping the rain going.
For Bengaluru, the IMD says that scattered rainfall with thunder and lightning is expected to continue during the next 3 to 5 days. Winds during these storms could blow at speeds between 30 and 50 km per hour, especially on Thursday and Friday.
Thunderstorms have already been reported across many parts of Karnataka in the last 24 hours. Gusty winds between 40 and 60 km per hour were also seen in isolated areas. These stormy conditions are expected to continue for at least the next three days.
Practice caution when stepping out: IMD warns citizens
The IMD has also said that the southwest monsoon is gradually moving forward. It has already reached parts of the southeast Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. In the coming 3 to 4 days, the monsoon is likely to spread further, which could mean more rain for southern states like Karnataka.
People in Bengaluru are advised to take care during this period. Avoid staying under trees or near weak structures during strong winds or lightning. Driving may also be difficult during heavy rain, so caution is recommended, especially during the evening hours.
Despite the rain, no heatwave warnings have been issued for Bengaluru or most parts of Karnataka this week. The maximum temperatures are expected to remain stable. There might be minor changes of 1–2 degrees Celsius, but no extreme heat is forecast.
