New Delhi:
The Board of Control for Cricket in India commemorated Sunil Gavakar’s achievement of becoming the first batter to score 10,000 runs in Test matches.
Gavaskar scored 34 Test centuries, which was a record for nearly two decades, until Tendulkar overtook him it in 2005.
Earlier Shukla had revealed that boardrooms at BCCI’s headquarters have been named after Gavaskar and Tendulkar.
“Delighted to be part of the inauguration of the newly dedicated Sachin Tendulkar Room and Sunil Gavaskar Room by @BCCI-a heartfelt tribute to two icons of Indian cricket, @sachin_rt and #SunilGavaskar. Their legacy continues to inspire generations,” Shukla wrote on X.
Gavaskar played for the Indian cricket team from 1971 to 1987 and is generally regarded as one of the greatest openers in the game, who was known for his technique and composure.
He crossed the 10,000-run against Pakistan in Ahmedabad in 1987 and is India’s third-highest run-scorer in Tests (10,122) in a lost headed by Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) and Rahul Dravid (13,288).
At a special ceremony on Thursday, the former skipper inaugurated a boardroom named ‘10000 Gavaskar’ at BCCI headquarters’s in Mumbai in the presence of BCCI president Roger Binny, vice president Rajeev Shukla, and secretary Devajit Saikia.
“Honouring a legend! India great Sunil Gavaskar inaugurates 10000 Gavaskar-a boardroom named in his honour and his iconic milestone-at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai,” the BCCI wrote on social media, with a video of the event.
The former opener signed a black-and-white photograph from his playing days, in what was a nostalgic moment of his storied career, for which he expressed his gratitude to the BCCI.
“MCA is my mother and BCCI is my father. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the opportunity that I have got to be what I am, thanks to Indian cricket. This is a huge honour,” the 75-year-old said.
“I am very thankful to BCCI for this honour. And I would like to give it all for BCCI… so anytime anything required of me, even at this age, please feel free.”
