Apple’s Personal Voice and Live Speech

Apple’s new accessibility features, Personal Voice and Live Speech, help users with speech difficulties communicate more easily. Personal Voice creates a digital version of a user’s voice, while Live Speech lets users type messages to be spoken aloud.

These are easy-to-use tools which are compatible with Apple devices. Personal Voice records a person’s voice in order to produce a synthetic version. Live Speech allows the users to type text which the device reads aloud. Both of them are part of Apple’s accessibility work. They provide an opportunity for people to retain their unique voice, despite the inability to speak in a natural manner.

Apple’s Personal Voice and Live Speech help people with speech difficulties communicate. These tools were introduced with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, and they allow users to make a digital version of their voice. They can utilise it in making calls or talking to someone. The features are designed to help people who are likely to lose speech skills, such as the people with neurodegenerative diseases. The technology uses everything in the device and keeps the data private.

Using Live Speech

Live Speech allows users to type their words, and the device will speak them out loud. Users may pick their own personal voice or the default voice provided by the system. To get started, go to Settings, choose Accessibility, and switch on Live Speech. When you are on a phone call or talking to someone, quickly triple-click the side button to open Live Speech and send a message. It is supported in FaceTime, on phone calls, and in some other apps.

How Personal Voice works

To make a personal voice, go through and read a set of text prompts. It takes about 15 minutes to finish and records 150 phrases. iPhone, iPad, or Mac will work on the audio while it is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi overnight. The outcome is a synthetic voice that matches the user’s voice. The voice is saved safely on the device and can be synced to other Apple devices through iCloud with end-to-end encryption.

Privacy and security

Apple made sure these features would protect user privacy. All Personal Voice data is protected by encryption and kept just on the device. Users must use Face ID, Touch ID, or enter a passcode to get access to their device. End-to-end encryption in iCloud makes sure sharing between devices is secure. Personal Voice can be used by third-party apps only if the user gives permission in the settings. This reduces the risk of misuse.

People with ALS or motor disorders depend on these features to communicate. They make it possible for users to keep their voice and identity. A man who lost his speech used Personal Voice to read bedtime stories to his daughter. The tools are available for free and can be set up quickly, making them usable for anyone with an Apple device that works with them.
