Another blow for AAP in Delhi as BJP clinches key position in MCD

The BJP won a key MCD Standing Committee seat, with Satya Sharma defeating AAP’s Hema Vohra. This follows BJP's earlier wins in all ward committees, setting the stage for a fierce Standing Committee Chairperson election on June 12th.

New Delhi:

BJP councillor Satya Sharma emerged victorious over AAP’s Hema Vohra by a decisive margin of 35 votes. Of the 227 councillors who cast their ballots, Sharma secured 130 votes against Vohra’s 95, with two votes ruled invalid. This latest win further strengthens the BJP’s position ahead of a high-stakes vote scheduled for June 12, when the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Committee will be elected alongside 12 members nominated by the MCD’s zonal committees.

In a fresh blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tightened its grip on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by winning a crucial seat in the Standing Committee on Tuesday, just a day after sweeping the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson posts in all ward committees.

Satya Sharma: Frontrunner for Chairperson’s post?

The MCD’s Standing Committee plays a critical role in the civic body’s decision-making process, overseeing major financial and policy decisions. Comprising 18 members, six directly elected from the House and 12 from zonal committees. Satya Sharma is now viewed as the frontrunner for the Chairperson’s post, although the final outcome will be decided in next week’s vote.

Congress abstains to vote on Tuesday

The current political make-up of the 238-member MCD includes 117 BJP councillors, 97 from AAP, 16 representing the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP), and 8 from Congress. Congress opted to abstain from Tuesday’s poll, while councillors from the BJP, AAP and IVP cast their votes.

Though the informal BJP-IVP alliance was expected to deliver a combined 133 votes, Sharma fell three short of that number, likely due to two AAP councillors being absent and possible cross-voting. Despite the slight shortfall, the BJP candidate’s win was never in doubt.
