Alert Mumbaikars! IMD predicts heavy rains throughout today
Mumbai reels under relentless monsoon rains, crippling infrastructure and breaking century-old records. Colaba logged 161.9 mm in a day, its highest since 2021, while cumulative rainfall shattered the 1918 record, prompting a yellow alert for further intense showers throughout today.

The downpour has already set records, with the Santacruz weather station logging 144 mm of rain in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday morning. Colaba fared even worse, registering 161.9 mm, the highest daily rainfall recorded in May since Cyclone Tauktae struck in 2021.
India’s financial capital remains gripped by chaos as relentless monsoon rains continue to batter the city, overwhelming its infrastructure and severely disrupting daily life. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city, warning of more intense rainfall throughout today.
Cumulative rainfall figures are even more staggering. Santacruz has recorded 324 mm since the rains began, while Colaba has broken a century-old record, surpassing the 279.4 mm logged in May 1918.
BMC fines 4 pumping stations for failing to perform duties
In a bid to contain the damage, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken punitive action against operators of four malfunctioning mini pumping stations. Located in some of the city’s most flood-prone zones including, Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Yellow Gate, and Chunabhatti. These stations failed to activate pumps during peak flooding. Each has been fined Rs 10 lakh after their inaction contributed to widespread waterlogging and brought both road and rail traffic to a near halt on Monday.
Continuous rains affect normalcy in Mumbai; 1 killed
In another rain related incident, a tragedy unfolded in Vikhroli as the rains claimed a life. A 26-year-old man, Tejas Naidu, was killed when a tree collapsed in a garden where he had been celebrating news of a new job with friends. While others managed to escape, Naidu was struck and succumbed to severe head and spinal injuries. Ironically, he had postponed his first day at work due to the inclement weather.
Due to the continuous heavy downpour, the city’s public infrastructure also came under intense pressure. Water ingress was reported at the newly constructed underground Acharya Atre Chowk station on Mumbai Metro’s Line 3. As a precaution, services between that station and Worli were suspended temporarily. Officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation maintained that the incident was unexpected but managed under strict safety protocols. Structural integrity of the underground system remains intact, and assurances were given that there is no risk to public safety.
