A detailed look at its text-to-speech capabilities

Speechify is a popular text-to-speech app with strong voice quality, cross-platform syncing, and good customization options. While it’s great for multitaskers and learners, its best features are locked behind a premium plan.

New Delhi:

Speechify is available in a free version and a paid version at $139 a year, which includes more features. Its realistic voices and ability to do many things are praised, but its expensive cost and some errors are criticised. With its 200+ voices, 60+ languages, and nine times faster speed, it is made for students, professionals, and language learners.

In today’s world full of multitasking, Speechify is an app that focuses on transforming any text into audio. In 2017, Cliff Weitzman, who is dyslexic, created the app to help people with learning disabilities, visual challenges, or those who are unable to find time to read. It is available for download on iOS, Android, the web, and as a Chrome extension, and it has more than 20 million users and a 4-star rating on Trustpilot.

Optical character recognition (OCR)

OCR allows users to scan printed books or documents with their phone’s camera and have them turned into audio. It’s a great help for those who study using paper copies. The advantage is that it works quickly and correctly for plain writing, which is useful for daily use. It helps visually impaired users use the web more easily. OCR faces problems reading handwritten notes or images that are not very clear, so scanning the same document several times is required. Only premium users can access and view this feature.

Text-to-speech conversion

Speechify’s main purpose is to convert written text from PDFs, emails, articles, or web pages into audio. It relies on AI to make voices that sound like Snoop Dogg or Gwyneth Paltrow for some enjoyable changes. Most voices are real and easy to understand, which helps make even lengthy texts interesting. It enables users to use various formats, making things easier and faster for them. Free version voices sound flat, and if a document has tables or columns, it may cause playback problems. Technical terms are sometimes pronounced incorrectly.

Cross-platform sync and offline mode

Speechify allows users to continue where they left off on any device they use. Users with the premium plan can save audio files to their devices for listening when offline. Syncing makes things run smoothly, and offline mode is excellent for listening when you’re away from the internet. Sometimes, syncing takes a long time and results in losing progress. Premium users can download offline, while those using the free version need strong internet, which is a problem for people living in places with bad coverage.

Speed and voice customisation

Users have the option to increase or decrease the speaking speed from 1x to 9x and pick from more than 200 voices in 60+ languages. It’s helpful for those who are fast at reading or learning new languages. The benefits include fast reading (up to 500 words per minute) and practicing pronunciation by listening to accents. If the speed is above 2.5x, the speech can sound distorted and become hard to understand. Sometimes the tone is not as engaging as when a human is reading.

The app draws attention to text as it is read and lets you take notes and scroll through the text with ease. Its purpose is to help users with ADHD concentrate better. The advantage is that highlighting makes it easier for students to understand. Exporting notes is very simple. Sometimes, with badly formatted PDFs, highlighting can skip pages or not work properly. Because the interface is clumsy on small devices, taking notes becomes less straightforward.

Verdict

Speechify performs well for students and multitaskers who need an accessible and useful tool, but some people may not choose it due to its premium cost and limited free use. Even though its AI voices and OCR are great, there are small glitches and problems with connectivity.
