The DhaniKodata village is situated on the border of Chhattisgarh and Odisha and is 30 kilometers away from the Sukma district headquarters. It is understood that the total population of this village is 620. A villager, Baman Muchaki, said, "Villagers are experiencing pain in their hands, legs, stomach and back. Their body also swells. People are dying a few days after experiencing pain and discomfort."
Sukma Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kapil Kashyap said, "The villagers have symptoms of cough, cold and fever. Since the villagers are not aware, they do not visit hospitals and their treatment is delayed. They are dependent on medicines in the forest. We are alert after the deaths were reported in the village."
The authorities got to know about the deaths through the media, following which they set up a medical camp in the village.
According to Kashyap, villagers having symptoms of cough, cold, and fever are being sent to hospitals. "So far, we have examined 80 villagers, in which we found that 9 of them were diagnosed with malaria," the Sukma CMO added.
