River Rafting suspended in Rishikesh as Ganga’s water level rises amid heavy rainfall

Rafting in Rishikesh has been suspended from June 24 as the Ganga's water level surged amid continuous mountain rains. Authorities closed all rafting points for safety, warning tour operators of strict action if violated. Monitoring continues across major ghats and danger zones.

The decision was announced by Jaspal Chauhan, Secretary of the Ganga River Rafting Management Committee and Adventure Tourism Officer, who confirmed that the suspension applies to all rafting points, including Kaudiyala, Marine Drive, Shivpuri, Club House, and Brahmapuri—the last remaining operational stretch until Tuesday. “Rafting has been completely stopped from June 24 in view of the rising water level of the Ganga. Any violation of this order will invite strict action,” Chauhan stated.

The popular river rafting season in Rishikesh has come to an abrupt halt as the water level of the Ganga continues to rise, driven by relentless rainfall in Uttarakhand’s mountainous regions. Authorities have suspended all rafting activities from June 24 until further notice, citing safety concerns for tourists and operators alike.

Ganga’s water level reached 338.00 meters at noon on Tuesday

The Central Water Commission reported that the Ganga’s water level reached 338.00 meters at noon on Tuesday, just 1.5 meters below the warning mark. The river is now flowing dangerously close to the ghats and embankments at key locations such as Laxman Jhula, Swargashram, Muni ki Reti, Tapovan, and Triveni Ghat. Water police and disaster management teams have been deployed to monitor the situation and prevent accidents.

Suspension has impacted hundreds of rafting operators

The suspension has impacted hundreds of rafting operators and thousands of tourists who had planned their adventure trips during the final week of the season. According to local sources, many tourists have already begun returning home disappointed, while rafting companies are bracing for financial losses.

Rafting in Rishikesh typically operates from September 1 to June 30

Rafting in Rishikesh typically operates from September 1 to June 30, with a scheduled two-month closure during July and August due to the monsoon. However, this year, the early onset and intensity of rainfall have forced authorities to shut down operations a week ahead of schedule.

Administration has urged visitors to stay away from riverbanks

Officials emphasized that the safety of tourists remains the top priority, and rafting will only resume once the water level stabilizes and technical teams give clearance. The tourism department is also keeping a close watch on weather forecasts and river behavior to determine when it will be safe to reopen. With the monsoon expected to intensify further, the administration has urged visitors to stay away from riverbanks, follow official advisories, and avoid venturing into the water under any circumstances.
