Navi Mumbai Airport to be India’s first with water taxi service
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that all types of transport systems should connect to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport to make travel easier for everyone. He emphasized that the airport must have a water taxi facility.
Mumbai:
During the meeting, CM Fadnavis said that all types of transport systems should connect to the new airport to make travel easier for everyone. “This airport must have a water taxi facility. It will be the first international airport in the country to offer such a service. There should also be good parking, and space for repairing aircraft. Road, metro, rail, and water transport links must be finished on time,” he said, as per PTI.
The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport in Maharashtra will become the first airport in India to offer water taxi services, said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, as reported by PTI. He spoke about this while reviewing the progress of the airport project with the state-run CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation).
Aim to make commute easier
He also said that a well-planned transport system should be set up from the nearest metro station to the airport. “This system must be smooth so that people do not face any problems while traveling. CIDCO should make sure all work finishes within the planned schedule,” the CM added.
Besides transport, CM Fadnavis also spoke about the quality of housing projects. He said that homes built by CIDCO must be of good quality and affordable for the people. “A time limit must be set for this too. CIDCO should take steps to ensure that people can get homes at reasonable rates,” he said.
CIDCO holds high-level meet for Navi Mumbai Airport completion
According to the official update, the Airport Information Publication (AIP) for Navi Mumbai Airport has already been released, and inspections by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are ongoing to issue the necessary license. The review looked closely at finishing all remaining work on the airside (runways and taxiways), terminal building, and landside areas to avoid delays and fix any challenges.
It was also reported that Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL) has completed all airside work. The airport is currently moving forward with getting final approvals from DGCA and security clearance from BCAS. They also confirmed that testing for readiness under the Operation Readiness and Transfer (ORAT) process is regularly taking place to make sure everything runs smoothly when the airport opens.
Last week, CIDCO officials held an important meeting to make sure all work at Navi Mumbai Airport is finished before its grand opening, officials shared.
On April 17, CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal led a review meeting to check the airport’s progress. The focus was to prepare the airport for both its opening ceremony and start of regular flights without any delays.
Vijay Singhal also checked on progress related to road and other transport access to the airport. He asked all departments involved to make sure that land access is fully ready before the airport is inaugurated.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport is planned to handle 90 million passengers and 3.2 million tonnes of cargo every year. However, in Phase 1, it will begin operations with a smaller capacity—20 million passengers and 0.8 million tonnes of cargo annually.
This first phase will include one runway with two parallel taxiways, a main terminal (T1), cargo terminals, and several other key facilities to support airport operations.
