Mohammed Shami to retire from Tests after Kohli and Rohit?

Senior India pacer Mohammed Shami rubbished a report claiming he is set to follow Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma into Test retirement.

New Delhi:

Senior India pacer Mohammed Shami slammed a dubious report claiming he is the next in line to announce his retirement from Test cricket after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli quit the longest format within a week. Shami has made it clear that he has no plans of hanging up his boots anytime soon, ahead of India’s all-important Test series against England next month.

Mohammed Shami struggling in IPL 2025:

Shami has been struggling in the ongoing IPL 2025 and has not enjoyed the best of the season for his team, Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Indian pacer has so far managed to pick up only six wickets in 9 matches for SRH at an average of 56.16. Shami was roped in by SRH for Rs 10 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction last year and was expected to lead the team’s pace attack this season. However, he has not managed to live up to the expectations.

Shami, who was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup, spent over a year on the sidelines due to an injury sustained during the campaign. He underwent Achilles heel surgery last year and made his comeback for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also featured in a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal, picking up seven wickets.

However, Shami is not planning to give up on his Test aspirations. On Tuesday, the senior pacer took to Instagram to slam a report claiming he was set to follow Rohit and Kohli into Test retirement. He criticised the report, calling it the ‘worst story’ of the day.

“Very well done, Maharaj. Apna job k din bhi gin loo kitna adieu hai. Badme dekh le hamara ap jaise ne satyiyanash kar diya future ka. Kabhi toh accha bol liya kare. aaj ki sabse kharab story sorry (Well done Maharaj. Count the days left in your job, too. You people destroy our future. Say something good at least some time. The worst story today),” Shami wrote on his Instagram story, bashing the report.

The Indian Test team is currently undergoing a significant transition after the retirements of R Ashwin, Rohit and Kohli. While Ashwin announced his retirement in December last year, midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, Rohit and Kohli both announced their decision to quit Tests recently.

He was later picked up in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 and played a key role in India’s memorable triumph in the tournament, with 9 wickets in five matches.
