IAF issues NOTAM for major air exercise near Pakistan border

IAF has issued a NOTAM for conducting a major air exercise. The NOTAM serves as an advance warning for all civil and commercial operators to void the designated airspace and opt for alternate flight paths during the exercise hours. This is a routine exercise, said the government.

New Delhi:

According to sources, this high intensity military drill will involve the active deployment of fighter jets, surveillance aircraft and other combat-support planes. The operations are expected to be visible from the airspace near Karachi and southern regions of Pakistan. This indicates the scale and seriousness of the mission.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) ahead of a major air exercise scheduled for June 20, 2025. The exercise will begin at 10:30 am and continue until 12:30 am the next day. It will cover a wide region near the India-Pakistan border and over the Arabian Sea.

Exercise believed to be crucial for enhancing effectiveness

Military analysts believe such exercises are crucial for enhancing coordination, response time and combat efficiency. They also serve to reassure citizens and send a message of deterrence to adversaries.

The IAF has been conducting a series of drills in the recent years to modernise its approach and strengthen its aerial capabilities. This exercise has been termed routine by its officials. Its implications in the broader strategic landscape are noteworthy particularly in light of the recent developments along India’s western front and Arabian Sea.

Exercise a part of routine preparedness

Officials say the exercise is part of routine preparedness but its timing and location have led to speculations about strategic signalling amid growing regional tensions. With multiple geopolitical flashpoints in the region, especially the complex India-Pakistan dynamic, the IAF’s maneuver is being viewed as a show of strength and readiness.

The NOTAM serves as an advance warning for all civil and commercial operators to avoid the designated airspace and opt for alternate flight paths during the exercise hours. Flight schedules of several airlines might be adjusted accordingly.
