Govt seeks public opinion on ideal AC temperature for energy efficiency

Govt seeks public opinion

The Indian government is seeking public input to determine optimal air conditioner (AC) temperature settings, aiming to balance energy efficiency with consumer comfort. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has launched a survey inviting citizens to share their preferred AC temperature settings. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote energy conservation and reduce electricity consumption associated with air conditioning.

The BEE’s survey is accessible online and encourages participation from a diverse demographic to ensure comprehensive data collection. The feedback will help policymakers understand consumer behavior and preferences, aiding in the development of guidelines that encourage energy efficiency without compromising comfort.

In 2018, the Ministry of Power proposed setting the default temperature of ACs to 24°C, highlighting that each 1°C increase in AC temperature could result in a 6% reduction in electricity usage. The current survey seeks to gather data on user preferences to inform potential policy decisions regarding default AC settings.

This move aligns with global trends where countries are adopting measures to optimize energy consumption in response to environmental concerns and the increasing demand for electricity. By involving the public in this decision-making process, the government aims to implement policies that are both effective and publicly acceptable.

The initiative reflects a proactive approach to energy conservation, recognizing the significant impact of residential and commercial air conditioning on the nation’s power grid. Public participation in the survey is expected to play a crucial role in shaping future regulations and promoting sustainable energy practices across the country.

It is available on mygov.in and is open till March 25.
