The operation comes in response to a series of incidents where individuals disguised as spiritual figures were found cheating devotees, particularly women, under the guise of Sanatan Dharma.

To preserve the sanctity, safeguard religious integrity and public trust, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced the launch of “Operation Kaalnemi,” a campaign targeting imposters posing as saints in Uttarakhand.

Addressing the media on Thursday, CM Dhami emphasized that Uttarakhand, revered as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, is home to peace-loving and trusting citizens. “Unfortunately, some antisocial elements are taking advantage of this trust,” he said. “They disguise themselves as saints and exploit people’s faith. This will not be tolerated”.

Dhami clarified that the crackdown is not limited to any one community. “If a person of any religion is found committing such acts, strict action will be taken,” he said, reinforcing the government’s commitment to social harmony and the dignity of Sanatan culture.

Operation Kaalnemi refers to a demon who misled Lord Hanuman

The name “Kaalnemi” draws from Hindu mythology, referencing the demon who attempted to mislead Lord Hanuman by disguising himself as a sage. CM Dhami likened today’s fraudsters to modern-day Kaalnemis, stating, “Just as Kaalnemi tried to deceive Hanuman, these individuals are misusing religious attire to manipulate innocent people”.

Special units, including officers in civilian clothes, will patrol areas where temporary camps are set up during religious events like the Kanwar Yatra. Verification of camp operators, volunteers, and hotel guests will be intensified to prevent criminal activity under religious cover.

Significant move since Kanwar Yatra starts today

The timing of the operation is significant, coinciding with the start of the Kanwar Yatra, which draws millions of devotees to Haridwar and Rishikesh. Last year alone, over four crore Kanwariyas visited the region, raising concerns about crowd management and potential threats from imposters mingling with pilgrims. The government has also mandated food vendors along pilgrimage routes to display licenses prominently, aiming to curb unregulated practices and maintain transparency.

Saints appreciated the steps taken against frauds

The initiative has received support from genuine spiritual leaders, who believe it will help preserve the sanctity of religious traditions. “Sadhus are symbols of Sanatan Dharma. Those who misuse this identity for crime and fraud deserve to be punished,” said a senior sadhu in Haridwar.
