Bengaluru:
International singer Ed sheeran, who is currently touring India as part of his Mathematics Tour, gave an impromptu live performance on Bengaluru’s Church Street on Sunday. However, the Bengaluru police halted his performance, despite his team insisting they had permission for the gig. The team also clarified that the performance was only meant to last a few minutes. Police intervened after the crowd started swelling.
A video of a cop pulling the plug on Ed sheeran’s microphone as he sang his chartbuster “Shape of You” on the streets of Bengaluru has now gone viral on social media. Sheeran appears visibly disappointed after the incident. In another video from the scene, Sheeran can be heard telling the crowd, “We have the permission to be here, but this policeman is shutting it down.”
Ed Sheeran is currently in India for his Mathematics Tour and is set to perform at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru’s Madavara on Sunday. Due to overwhelming demand for tickets, the singer has also announced an additional concert date in the city. Earlier, Sheeran performed in Hyderabad and Chennai. At his Chennai concert, he was joined by music maestro AR Rahman for a mashup of “Urvashi Urvashi” and “Shape of You”.
Speaking about his love for India and his experience performing in the country, Sheeran said, “Every time I come back to India, it feels more and more exciting. The metric that you would have measured success by back in 2014, I would have no idea that people liked my music here. It wasn’t until coming here in 2015, that I realised for the first time that people really like my music here. Whereas now, it’s clear that India is my biggest market.”
